33 Years Ago Today, A Tribe Called Quest Released Its Debut Studio Album ‘People’s Instinctive Travels and The Paths of Rhythm’

Queen’s Historic rap group collective A Tribe Called Quest – consisting of Phife Dawg and Q-Tip – released its debut LP ‘People’s Instinctive Travels and The Paths of Rhythm’ 33 years ago today. Released on April 10th, 1990, the LP gained prominence for its funk and jazz-influenced sounds amidst the provocative rise of gangsta rap at the time.

The 14-track LP is home to numerous Hip-Hop classics including “Can I Kick It?”, “Bonita Applebum”, “After Hours”, “Youthful Expression” and “Pubic Enemy”. Notably, this was A Tribe Called Quest’s first full-length effort since its formation in Queens, New York in 1985. The group re-released an extended LP after turning 25 in 2015.

The ’25th Anniversary Edition’ adds three guest verses to original records – J. Cole on “Can I Kick It? Remix”, Pharrell Williams on “Bonita Applebum Remix” and Cee Lo Green on “Footprints Remix”.

The LP paved the way for the coming together of De La Soul, Queen Latifah, Jungle Brothers, Q-Tip and Phife Dawg. Influenced by each other’s influential discography, the five Hip-Hop artists formed the ‘Native Tongues’.
