The soundtrack to John Singleton’s 1995 film Higher Learning, titled Music From The Motion Picture “Higher Learning”, was released 28 years ago today. The fifteen-track record – which was released on January 3rd 1995 – is one of the earliest motion picture soundtracks which featured some of Hip-Hop’s most influential figures including Ice Cube, Outkast, Raphael Saadiq, Mista Grimm and Zhané alongside Rage Against The Machine, The Brand New Heavies, Tori Amos, Liz Phair and Tori Amos.
N.W.A.’s legendary rapper Ice Cube performed the Sir Jinx-produced opening track Higher and Something To Think About. Outkast – Atlanta’s iconic Hip-Hop duo led by André “3000” Benjamin and Antwan “Big Boi” Patton – performed Organized Noize-produced Phobia. Notably, Liz Phair was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance at the 37th Annual Grammy Awards
“Higher Learning” was released through 550 Music/Epic Soundtrax and peaked at the 39th position on the Billboard Top 200 Albums that year with Raphael Saadiq’s Ask of You at the 19th position on the Billboard Hot 100.
