In 1986 Today, Afrika Bambaataa & The Soulsonic Force Changed Hip-Hop Forever With ‘Planet Rock: The Album’

37 years ago, South Bronx’s legendary record producer and DJ Afrika Bambaataa & electro-funk and Hip-Hop consortium The Soulsonic Force, led by Bambaataa himself, released the historic Hip-Hop album “Planet Rock: The Album”.

The 7-track LP, which reportedly consisted of numerous previously released rap records 1981-1986, featured guest appearances by rap pioneer and lead vocalist of the iconic “The Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five” Melle Mel and R&B funk band Trouble Funk.

“Planet Rock: The Album” is one of the earliest hit Hip-Hop records and continues to be remembered for its marquee recordings. The LP features timeless Old School Rap Classics including “Planet Rock”, “Looking For The Perfect Beat”, “Renegades of Funk”, “Frantic Situation (Frantik Mix)”, “Who You Funkin’s With” featuring Melle Mel, “Go-Go Pop” featuring Trouble Funk and “They Made A Mistake”.

The LP changed Hip-Hop forever and paved the way for numerous Old School Hip-Hop classics including “People’s Instinctive Travels & The Path of Rhythm” by A Tribe Called Quest, “Return To The 36 Chambers” by Ol’ Dirty Bastard of the Wu-Tang Clan, “Illmatic” by New York’s legendary emcee Nas & popularised Hip-Hop across the globe.
