Punjabi Hip-Hop/Rap & Pop superstar AP Dhillon, born Amrit Pal Singh Dhillon, has announced his long-awaited debut documentary film “AP Dhillon: First of A Kind”.
Slated to premiere on August 18th via Amazon Prime Video, the documentary traverses Dhillon’s affecting struggles in the earliest days of his music career and his unprecedented rise to global prominence through cult modern Punjabi records.
Notably, this is one of the very few efforts by a Punjabi artist at the epicentre of global Indian music and arrives amidst Dhillon’s disruptive return after a long hiatus.
Ahead of the documentary series, which is yet to receive an official trailer, Dhillon shared a rare clip of him performing a Punjabi pop melody “the night before I left India to move to Canada.”
“Everyday thousands of people like me leave their families to immigrate to a new world with the hopes of a better future. What these people do not realize is the struggle that lies ahead… cultural differences, language barriers, financial struggles, and lack of support within our own communities,” Dhillon wrote in an affecting message alongside the clip.
“We are all trying to find our way in a world that we don’t understand and that doesn’t understand us,” Dhillon said.
Dhillon further shared a riveting message for his “fellow creatives” going through similar struggles and exalted for unity among themselves.
“What I hope for you to take away from this is it’s not me that is a First Of A Kind but our entire generation is. All my fellow creatives who are paving the way for our culture to go global are the First Of A Kind and it is time to unite so that the world can recognize our movement. We are ALL the First Of A Kind, but definitely not the last,” Dhillon wrote.
AP Dhillon’s documentary arrives amidst high anticipation for his next Punjabi record. While the ‘G.O.A.T.’ is yet to announce new music, the U.K. rap superproducer Steel Banglez has confirmed new music with Dhillon.
Most recently, Dhillon linked up with legendary rap filmmaker Spike Jordan for “Sleepless”. The incendiary single was preceded by his massive return to global Punjab music with “True Stories” alongside Shinda Kahlon.
