Miles Parks McCollum, popularly known as Lil Yachty has released his fifth studio album Let’s Start Here. A disruptive departure from hard-hitting mumble rap, the fourteen-track record draws heavy influences from psychedelic rock and punk before crashing head straight into classic alternative rap.
The latest LP arrives amidst the last year’s leak of his LP ‘Sonic Ranch’. With thirteen tracks on the album at the time, the reported leak included records like ‘The Ride’, ‘Running Out of Time’, ‘Blind’, ‘Say Something’, ‘Paint The Sky’, ‘Should I Be’, ‘The Alchemist’, ‘Reach The Sunshine’ and more” surfacing online on Christmas, “by evening, his (Lil Yachty) entire album titled Sonic Ranch reportedly “hit the internet”.
However, Yachty recuperated from the massive leak and announced his latest album under the Let’s Start Here banner and an affecting trailer.
Yachty first hinted at his inclination towards releasing a non-rap psychedelic rock and funk album as early as January 2022. During a conversation with Atlanta’s Ice Box Jewellery Story, the SaintLaurentYSL emcee discussed his plans for a non-rap album in the works.
“My new album…it’s a non-rap album, it’s alternative. It’s sick,” Yachty said at the time. “I’ve always wanted to [do an alternative album] but now I have met all these amazing musicians and producers. It’s like a psychedelic alternative project that’s cool, it’s different,” he continued. “It’s different. It’s all live instrumentation.”
“I’ve changed my dynamic, you know what I’m sayin’?” he added. “Like, I’m telling you, this album…I’m creating music a whole lot differently.”
In October 2021, one of the most influential figures in psychedelic rock and funk Tame Impala shared a Lil Yachty remix of their record ‘Breathe Deeper’. As per many, that was one of the earliest collaborative efforts which encouraged Yachty to release a psychedelic funk album of his own.
