Amidst a disruptive resurgence of Hindi Cinema’s iconic compositions & its intersection with Indian rap music, breakthrough Punjabi Emcee Otaal has released his latest single sampling legendary playback singer Lata Mangeshkar.

Titled “Saun Di Jhadi”, the single samples Lata Mangeshkar’s 1981 Indian pop record “Thoda Resham Lagta Hai”.

Written by Anand Bakshi, the single was first sampled by iconic woman rapper Truth Hurts on “Addictive”. Featuring Hip-Hop pioneer Eric B., the track served as the lead single to Hurts’ debut rap album “Truthfully Speaking”.

Last year, American rap superstar Cardi B teased a single sampling “Addictive” too.

However, “Saun Di Jhadi” marks the first such instance where a Punjabi artist has sampled the historic pop single for a rap record.

The single arrives alongside a massive visual treatment filmed in Surrey, British Columbia. Watch it below.

Most recently, breakthrough Delhi-bred rappers Karun & Nanku sampled Indian music director R.D. Burman’s classic 1972 composition “Ghum Hai Kisi Ke Pyar Mei” on the “Mhmm” single.

It was preceded by Indian rapstars Dino James & Kr$na sampling historic Hindi cinema records on “Dil Lena Khel” and Umair-produced drill single “Joota Japani”
