21 Savage has drawn massive flak over his comments on the legendary Queens emcee and lyricist Nasir Jones or ‘Nas’.
Speaking during a Clubhouse room over the weekend, the ‘Her Loss’ and ‘A Lot’ rapper was asked about the definition of relevance in rap and of the iconic ‘N.Y. State of Mind’ emcee. “I don’t feel like he’s relevant. I don’t feel like Nas is relevant.” 21 said. He further said that the veteran hip-hop superstar from Queensbridge has a “loyal” fanbase. “Nah, he just has a loyal fanbase and he still makes good-ass music.” 21 further said.
The rapper drew criticism from the Clubhouse room itself with the attendees repeatedly saying “One Mic” – subtly referring to Nas’ third single from his fifth LP ‘Stillmatic’ released in 2001.
Hip-Hop fans took to Twitter to express their angst over 21’s comments on arguably the finest lyricist in rap music.
A twitter user responded to 21’s comments with Snoop Dogg – another legendary veteran of Hip-hop who released ‘Deep Cover’ with Dr. Dre when 21 wasn’t even born at the time – asserting “somebody get that n**** (referring to 21) off his phone man. GET YO’ ASS OFF YO’ PHONE, N****!” Snoop says in the video.
Another twitter user ‘Ghetto Othello’ speculated that 21 commented so because he felt like he “owed Jay-Z” after he helped with the “case” – referring to the time when HOV helped 21 out after he was arrested by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in 2019. “Drake treats like you like a water boy . Let’s call a spade a spade . You made that statement because you feel like you owed jay z after he helped you with your Case.” the user wrote.
“this (comment) from a n**** who says 21 on 60% of his verses ol’ basic lyrics.” Von Dirt McGirt wrote on Twitter.
Following the massive backlash, 21 tried to clear out the air around his comment and said that he would “never disrespect Nas”.
“I would never disrespect nas or any legend who paved the way for me y’all be tryna take stuff and run with it.” 21 wrote in a tweet.
Perhaps, this isn’t what Drake meant when he said “Do you thing, 21. Do you thing” on ‘Rich Flex’.
