Legendary emcee and songwriter Playboi Carti, born Jordan Carter, has made a massive return to rap music. The young rapper, recognized across the globe for his gruff rap vocals and a highly influential discography spanning three hard-hitting rap LPs – the self-titled “Playboi Carti”, “Die Lit” and “Whole Lotta Red”, has linked up with pop superstar The Weeknd and Madonna.
Produced by Hip-Hop superproducer Metro Boomin, who released the star-studded “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse” soundtrack earlier today, and Mike Dean, the record serves as the sophomore single from The Weeknd’s upcoming soundtrack for ‘The Idol’. Notably, the “Heartless” singer is slated to appear in the drama series created by Reza Fahim, Sam Levinson and himself.
As reported earlier, The Weeknd first previewed the record during ‘The Idol’ premier at the Cannes Festival in France last week. Appearing alongside Lily-Rose Depp and Levinson, the legendary singer previewed the single with Carti‘s verse which left the world in shock.
The last time that the world heard a verse by Carti was on Trippie Redd‘s “Miss The Rage” which has become eponymous with the sentiment shared by the legendary emcee’s fans worldwide. It was followed by his guest verse on Kanye West‘s “Off The Grid”.
Ours was one of the first publications to speculate that the record might be called “Popular” and will feature Madonna with guest production by Boomin & Dean. Upon the record’s release, The Weeknd took to Twitter to share a mastered snippet which showcases himself alongside Travis Scott at Festival de Cannes. Check it out below.
“Popular”, which serves as the follow-up to the Future-assisted “Double Fantasy”, is released alongside an exclusive visualizer. Watch it here via YouTube.
