Watch Grandmaster Flash, LL Cool J, Slick Rick, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj & More Deliver Historic ‘Hip Hop 50th Anniversary’ Performance At MTV Video Music Awards 2023

Earlier today, the 40th MTV Video Music Awards, or the VMAs, honoured some of the most influential visual acts in music across genres.

While numerous cult figures accepted prestigious awards at this year’s VMAs including “Best Artist of The Year”, “Song of The Year”, “Album of The Year”, “Video of The Year” and more, the New Jersey-held ceremony recruited legendary emcees Grandmaster Flash, LL Cool J, Slick Rick, Lil Wayne, Doug E. Fresh and Nicki Minaj for a historic “Hip Hop 50th Anniversary” medley which took rap fans on a riveting journey through rap music.

Across their affecting performance, the Hip-Hop supergroup showcased a generation-spanning live set traversing rap songs by artists which cut across years of Hip-Hop.

The performance opened up with Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five’s “The Message”. Minaj followed suit and performed “Itty Bitty Piggy” and “Red Ruby Da Sleeze.” Her performance was furthered by Lil Wayne performing “A Milli,” followed by LL Cool J with “Mama Said Knock You Out.”

Run-DMC joined LL Cool J at the VMAs for the first in over 35 years and performed their hit rap records with the supergroup to close off the medley.
