Legendary rapper and songwriter Lil Wayne, born Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. and oftentimes referred to as Weezy F. Baby, has been conferred with the prestigious BMI Hip-Hop Icon Award at the 2023 Broadcast Music Inc. R&B/Hip-Hop Awards. The veteran rapper, who is recognised across the globe for his lyrical prowess and historic body of work, received the award at a star-studded award ceremony in Miami Beach.
Besides Wayne, who most recently premiered the sophomore single from “Tha Carter VI” LP “Kat Food”, numerous rap and R&B artists were recognized for their immense contribution to rap music last year.
As per Baller Alert, “Lil Yachty, Tay Keith, and RIOTUSA were named “Producer of the Year,” while talents like ATL Jacob and Lunch Money Lewis were also lauded. The title of “Songwriter of the Year” was bestowed upon Doja Cat, Tems, and Chris Brown, while Lizzo’s “About Damn Time” earned the coveted “Song of the Year” accolade. Additionally, the esteemed Impact Award was presented to Ice Spice.”
Besides being conferred with the Icon Award, Wayne has received the “BMI Songwriter of the Year” award for a staggering number of four times throughout his career.
Last year, legendary choppa emcee Busta Rhymes was honoured with the Icon Award too.
“As a legend and superstar of hip-hop, Lil Wayne is synonymous with the genre,” Broadcast Music Inc. said about Wayne’s historic feat in a statement.
“He’s been part of the BMI family since 2002, and we’re proud to name him a BMI Icon in keeping with his reputation as one of the most influential artists of all time,” it said further.
Another legendary rapper Nicki Minaj was swift to congratulate Lil Wayne too.
“Where do I begin? You know what? I just wanna say… I so greatly appreciate your contributions that you have made to the culture of rap. Thank you for all of the inspiring things you’ve said to me personally to make me want to go super duper hard. Thank you for just always being the genius you are and the leader you are,” Minaj said in a heartfelt video on social media.
