The late Punjabi Hip-Hop pioneer Sidhu Moose Wala released his third and last studio album “Moosetape” two years ago. Released on May 15th 2021, the legendary emcee and songwriter from Mansa, Punjab linked up with numerous Hip-Hop superstars including Indian rap royalty Divine, Wazir Patar, Kali Denali Music’s influential emcee Bohemia, South London’s Tion Wayne, Rajakumari, Sikander Kahlon and more.
Produced by London Drill and Punjabi Hip-Hop superproducers Steel Banglez, The Kidd, Wazir Patar, Snappy among others, the massive 32-track effort is regarded by many as the most influential rap record of our times.
Moosa’s final full-length record is home to various hard-hitting records including “295”, “The Last Ride” alongside Wazir Patar, “Moosedrilla” feat. Gully Gang’s bossman Divine, “Celebrity Killer” feat. Tion Wayne, “Invincible” feat. Stefflon Don, “Built Different”, “Sidhu Son”, “Signed To God”, “Burberry” and “Racks and Rounds” feat. Sikander Kahlon.
While the album was recognized for being one of the biggest rap records at the time, it had an extraordinary rollout too. Just ahead of its release, Moosa asserted that he will confirm the LP’s release date if he fetches over 50,00,000 comments on his Instagram post. Moosa’s listeners stormed his social media and did so within just 2 days. The rest is history.
Notably, “295” posthumously charted at 154th position on the mainstream Billboard 200 chart and turned Moosa into a worldwide rap superstar. The legendary ‘Mera Na’ emcee and singer was the first Indian Punjabi artist to do so. Moose Wala’s magnum opus is home to far-reaching visuals for a slew of rap records from the album.
As Moose Wala established his stature as Hip-Hop’s next global phenomenon and was, perhaps, gearing up for more iconic rap records, he was shot dead in an infamous shooting on May 29th 2022. For many, Moose Wala paved the way for Indian emcees and record producers to achieve worldwide recognition.
Rest in Peace to the greatest to ever do it.
